Whew gathered us by our edges. This is all so good and though I was one of the people who is still sad to hear the news, you're absolutely right. She might be relieved that she doesn't have to do this song and dance anymore hoping it works out. She can get off the merry go round and do whatever is coming next which doesn't have to be anything at this moment either. I think the most annoying thing is, anything from 2020 as far as black and black-owned, was nothing but performative and that is what actually pisses me off. She absolutely deserved those investments, but I just feel like so many people showed their tails because we were all sat. None of them really meant it which to me is even worst and goes to show that even when people come crawling back it's not because they necessarily want to, they just don't want to look like the bad person either. Ugh!
yes yes and yes. i bet she's probably more relieved than she can let on lol. whatever she chooses to do next I know she will be fine. and yes on post 2020. it's fucked, but if anything it should tell us that we need to stop begging and banking on allyship. it's my biggest takeaway at least.
I do really feel like the VC funding that happened in 2020 onward was so long overdue and amazing to see, but the reality that it was short-lived and performative is fucked. this is such an insightful piece, thank you so much for sharing. will be thinking about your takeaways.
I really appreciate this narrative! It encourages me to rethink how I look at business closures (especially as I closed a portion of my business and felt relieved doing so). When I stopped offering photography so many people wanted to tell me sorry when I didn’t feel bad! I had a phenomenal experience and just knew my heart wasn’t in it any more. I decided I wanted to grow another business in a different way.
I do believe that several things can be true (the system is flawed) and also Black trauma shouldn’t be conflated to justify a closure or a business launch and content going viral and you’re right white folks dgaf (only care about what is lucrative snd “in vogue”).
She had a phenomenal run against many odds and that should be celebrated.
YES! I totally relate to that ending 100%. Black businesses specifically always seem to have that same conditioned response lol. And agreed. Multiple things can and are true. The industry is fucked, she built a beautiful brand against great odds, etc. But my biggest feeling is that we need to be a little more responsible on how we exploit or engage with Black pain. So over the same old story 😩
Per usual! Stunning and lovely and eloquent
thank you friend 🫶🏾
This is everything everyone wouldn’t say and I such a good angle of the situation not discussed.
